ART + SOUL
Saturday August 6, 2011

Nu-Soul continues to take part in the Downtown Los Angeles Renaissance transforming a 100-year old speakeasy in the historic Alexandria Hotel into a unique experience in sight + sound.

Held every other 1st Saturday, ART + SOUL features live performances from cutting edge talent, art exhibitions from a diverse set of local artists, mood enhancing visual projections, and LIVE ART all within the one-of-a-kind setting of The Mezz.

Live Performances by:

BLU

With his cool-headed SoCal demeanor and everyman charisma, Blu was championed at the onset of his recording career when he collaborated with Emanon DJ/producer Exile for the highly acclaimed LP Below the Heavens (2007). When Below the Heavens first hit shelves in August 2007, Blu and Exile were virtual unknowns in underground hip-hop, but Blu’s deft songwriting and Exile’s soul-drenched, Jay Dee-influenced production quickly amassed them a national audience. Below the Heavens ended up on many critics’ year-end lists and, particularly, launched Blu into the public hip-hop eye. Remaining independent, Blu has since worked with the likes of such acclaimed and diverse artists as J-Period, Q-Tip, The Roots, Mark de Clive-Lowe, The Grouch & Eligh, and Tanya Morgan.

E REECE

The hard penetrating, self-reflective vocals of this MC poignantly illustrate that true school hip hop is alive and well. E Reece brings you “Organic Hip Hop” to feed your mind, body and soul with no additives or preservatives. He’s performed at numerous clubs, universities and festivals across the globe and the country, opening for and playing alongside such artists as Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Talib Kweli, DJ Babu, DJ Revolution, Greyboy, Rich Medina, MED, Eternia and others. “Once they’ve heard my music or seen my live show, I want people to believe in the power of positive music and to know that real hip hop isn’t dead.” Look out for his new EP “The T.iM.E is Now” with Theimagination due out early fall ’11.

So Cal native Aloe Blacc began his recording career as an MC back in 1995, when he joined up with hip-hop producer Exile to form the mainstay indie rap group, Emanon. A few years later, Aloe would stow away on a Lootpack European tour and become fast friends with Oh No a relationship which led to many fruitful collaborations as a solo artist.

These days, Aloe Blacc has evolved into a true Renaissance man dubbed the indie R. Kelly by online retailer Turntable Lab. Recordings like his Latin cover of John Legends Ordinary People prove that not only can this multi-instrumentalist produce, rap and sing but he can flip it in Spanish, too. With an amazingly broad set of influences ranging widely from the acoustic guitar stylings of folk artist Cat Stevens, to the soul-stirring sounds of the Negro Spirituals, Aloe prides himself on the spectrum of his musical roots. His sound often forays into the digital R&B realm, but always grooves with a tinge of Latin and the pulse of hip-hop.

I got the pleasure of seeing him live for the first time at the ROOTDOWN. Honestly, I’m impressed by his talent & his character. Just another cool cat doing what he loves. don’t sleep on this!
